Frida Kahlo was an Mexican artist who is well known for her feminist and surreal art pieces. Another way Frida is so recognizable is due to her appearance. She didn’t care what people thought of her so she never shaved her uni-brow or slight mustache . She embraced herself for who she was. Her art was very true to Mexican culture and has been taken up by feminists and many LGBT people. Early in Kahlo’s life she suffered from polio and nearly died from a bus accident in her teens. Not being able to move very much, she took up her childhood passion of art. Regaining strength she began to travel the world with her art. She married Diego Rivera, a fellow artist. She was a master of self-portraits and surrealism. She was able to capture the smallest details of life and put them onto a canvas. Her art was often referred to as magical. Throughout her life she painted 200 paintings, sketches, and drawings. 143 of her paintings, 55 were self portraits. One of her most famous paintings is “Broken Column” . This painting is a self portrait that depicts Frida nude and she is opened down the middle revealing her spine. Her spine is represented like a roman column, the column is shattered like her spine was. In the painting she is wearing her spinal brace and there are screws and nails piercing her body. The painting portrayed her battle with her spinal injury from polio and the bus accident. Frida Kahlo was and will remain an inspiration for many artists, feminists, lgbt, and people fighting physical and mental battles.
