Braeden Keeven, Armani Romaro & Roman Ibarra March 11, 2019 Skateboarding: From Then ‘Til Now Skateboarding started with roller skates and 2x4s in the 1950s and grew to be one of the most popular cultures around the world. It was called sidewalk surfing and eventually evolved into what skateboarding is today. Skaters started to develop a new kind of transportation and a new way of fun. The skating epidemic grew fast and evolved as new board shapes came out and tricks were invented. Over time skateboarding became more of a sport and people became passionate about it. Competitions were held to declare the best skaters of the time, but at first they could only spin in circles and pivot on the board. Around 1978 Alan Gelfand invented the trick to revolutionize skateboarding. He was able to get into the air after popping the board off of a quarter pipe and sliding hit front foot forward. The ollie opened a gateway to many more skateboarding tricks. After the ollie came a new wave of flatground skaters. People like Rodney Mullen did things never thought to be possible at this time. Mullen invented kickflips, 360 flips and the flat ground ollie. After using different foot positions Mullen found that so much more could come out to skateboarding. With more people starting to skate, the style of them evolved a lot until it came to what we know today. Check out this video of Mullen freestyle skating. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1U-cgn3cEGA Skaters started off wearing shorts and bright beach clothes in the 70s to baggy ripped jeans with tee shirts in the 90s. Skaters started to street skate in the city on hand rails and ledges. The community started to see skaters as reckless and disrespectful. Although the people around them didn't like it, skaters didn’t care what stood in the way between them and fun. After all the changes and challenges skaters went through, the culture has carried with them into today's generations. Skating nowadays seems to be a mix of all types of people and skating throughout the years and still hasn't become socially acceptable. Skating has changed since the beginning and will continue to change in the future.
