My job at work is to help prep and fabricate the counter top pieces of granite at work. I like this job because it’s a laid back atmosphere and the crews are small, so you get to know the people you work with. If a customer orders a lot of granite, the work is hard because the pieces are so heavy.
Granite is a stone; its heavy and fragile and people prefer it to synthetic countertops mostly because it looks nicer.
Our crew goes to customers house and the customer describes what he wants done. We give him a book with the different colors of granite to choose from. Sometimes the customer wants the work done that day. If it’s not too late we will pick up their order and bring it back that day and get it done.
When we have the slab that the customer ordered, we take it back to the shop. The slab goes on a table with a laser that cuts the slab to size. Then we fabricate the slab by smoothing the rough sides with a grinder and then polishing it so the side match the top. Then we go back to the customers home and install it.
The average pay is between $34,000 to $42,000 in the Denver area depending on training and experience. According to Zippa the Career Expert web site, even though flooring installers and tile and marble setters learn through apprenticeships most people still learn more from the jobs and start as a helper.
