Shark Attacks
Shark attacks are rare, but can be very traumatic events. There were only 66 confirmed shark attacks in 2018 worldwide.
Out of the 66 attacks only 5 were fatal shark attacks. The most dangerous times to get in the water are during sunrise and sunset because sharks also like to eat breakfast and dinner, so that is when they are most active for hunting. Sharks can be deadly, but you are more likely to be killed by a dog or jellyfish than one of the 440 different shark species. Confirmed unprovoked attacks1989-2018
Shark attack statistics: The possibility of getting attacked is little to none. Even death from fireworks (1 in 340,733)is more likely to happen. The chance of dying from a shark attack is (1 in 3,748,067, but it is the most scary and deadly. Sharks are the most dangerous animal in the sea.
Between 1958and 2016there were 2,785 unprovoked attacks around the world, and 439 were fatal.
In 2000 there were 79 shark attacks, and 11 of them were fatal.
In 2005 and 2006 the number went down to 61, and fatalities went down to 4 per year.
2013-2017 saw the average of 84 confirmed unprovoked incidents, which went down to 66 in 2018.
Unprovoked attacks are Incidents that happen in the sharks’ habitat, but with no human messing with a shark. In provoked attacks, a human purposely messes with a shark by trying to touch it or feed it, usually while unhooking or removing a shark from a fishnet. 10 worst shark attacks: One of the worst shark attacks was the USS Indianapolis incident. In July 1945 the USS Indianapolis was split in half by Japanese torpedoes. More than 900 men were on the ship. They were at the mercy of the sharks in the Pacific ocean. Rescuers arrived 4 days later they found 579 men dead. A lot were chewed to pieces. There were 316 survivors. One of the survivors spoke up and said, “The sharks were around, hundreds of them... Everything would be quiet and then you’d hear somebody scream and you know a shark had got him.” -Woody James 2 deadly attacks happened it was along the coast of Jersey Shore during the deadly heat wave in 1916. The first victim was Charles Vansant, 25 years old. He went for an early swim. When he got attacked the shark ripped the flesh off his thigh, and Vansant bled to death. The other day was Charles Bruder 27 years old, when he was swimming off the beach at Spring lake. He died after the shark tore into his abdomen and bit off his legs. Shark Attack Survivor: Bethany Hamilton was a shark survivor that not only kept good determination, faith and hope, but also encouraged others to do the same by sharing her story.Bethany was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark at the age of 13 and she lost her left arm. That ended her dream career, but 1 month after the attack she got back into it and in 2 years time she had won her first national surfing title. At 17 years old she started sold, she professionally and still is an active surf competition till this day. She continues to tell her story and inspires others to be unstoppable.
