Minuet Godinez, Miguel Ibarra, Armando Lopez, & Pablo Maclala February 15, 2019 Polar Vortex There has been a reported death toll of 21 people in the past three days. Due to a Polar vortex. Affecting chicago with -46 C weather turning everything into ice. But not also Chicago. Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, and Chicago have all recorded bitterly cold temperatures. (links in the states) What is a polar vortex? Well a polar vortex is a low pressure area - a wide expanse of swirling cold air. There are two polar vortices in the Earth’s atmosphere, overlying the North and South poles. Each polar vortex is a persistent, large-scale, low-pressure zone less than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) in diameter, that rotates counter-clockwise at the North pole (called a cyclone) and clockwise at the South pole both polar vertices rotate eastward around the poles. How cold is it? Well the polar vortex forecast can go as low as 40-below. This becomes apparent when the jet stream amplitude increases (meanders) over the northern hemisphere, causing Rossby waves to propagate further to the south or north, which in turn transports warmer air to the north pole and polar air into lower latitudes How is it animals are staying warm? The Chicago Police Department, along with Indianapolis animal care and control, are seeking cold and starving dogs. They look for animals in homes where they leave them outside. They look for them under the snow and the freezing ice. Leaving your pet out in the extreme elements can lead to a misdemeanor and fines ranging up to several thousand dollars.
